Plagiarism

How people are catched in plagiarism? They quote an entire paragraph or two of text and include the citation for it at the end, but neglect to put quotation marks around the passage. Since it is an exact quote and they didn’t give proper credit, it’s plagiarism. I caught one girl doing this last week. I was disappointed by it, and she got her zeroes as the consequence. Anyone who thinks this is harsh should be alerted to the fact that I have talked about avoiding plagiarism and reiterated what it is in class until all my students are sick and tired about hearing me mention it. So there really is no excuse at this point for not quoting huge chunks of the paper. And as often happens with excessively plagiarized work, it would have received a failing grade anyway, even if it was properly cited. This is an irony that plagiarists in my classes have not seemed to catch on to. It’s really not worth cheating, because even if they don’t get caught for it, they’ll probably fail on the merit of the weak research and writing anyway!

You wannabe plagiarists out there, please take note, you have to be more subtle than this!

Whale vocab richer than thought

It cannot be language as we know it, but the whales do not have any shortage of ways to be done understood. So ample it is his vocal repertoire, in fact, that the whales can call to their young people, it courts potential companions and it even express emotions, according to the investigators who have identified 622 social sounds in whales of humpback. Its work will be presented/displayed in the next joint meetings of the acoustic society of America (HANDLE) and of the acoustic society of Japan in Hawaii. The social sounds are written, unpatterned the sounds that are different from songs more very long, complex of the whale. The new investigation adds to a body every greater time of the evidence than the whales transport more meaning with vocalizations than it thought previously. “It would not say (the whales have) language, as that is a human term,” the news this Dunlop of the discovery of Rebecca. Dunlop, that worked in the study, is investigator in the school of veterinary sciences in the university of Queensland, Australia. The “whales do not chain these together sounds as words and orations of the form. It is rather a simple vocabulary,” she said. The scientists visually followed 60 cases of the whales that emigrated throughout the coast of the east of Australia. The investigators used an arsenal of static hydrophone – sensible equipment that detects acoustic waves – to bind to the sounds of the whale to the several activities and contexts. They identified 622 different sounds, that fell in 35 basic types. These include “wops” done by the females, “thwops” done by the men, the “barks” made when the cases start off, and the shouts acute that appeared to express rage. In addition to vocalizations, the investigators found that the whales send messages with body language – practicing an opening the surface, giving a pat to the water with their tails and blowing subaqueous bubbles. Famous by your long, complex songs, whales also “to speak sometimes” the short units of the song individually instead of singing them. The men specially look like to make this when trying court a female. The “song is a noisy signal of the diffusion and two singers who sing at the same time are limited to be confused the receiver,” Dunlop speculated. “If he is trying to attract a female, but it does not wish its signal confused with another singer in the area, then to use units of the song in this case could be the way advanced.” She thinks that they are the whales of a reason so vocal she is because the sound travels better in water than light, and so the Vista is less useful to the whales that the hearing. Christopher Clark, director of the research program of Bioacoustics in the university of Cornell, lead a similar study in right whales. It needed the irony that hardly as the investigators are gaining a better understanding of vocalizations of the whale, the human beings is creating as much noise of the ocean – with the shipment, exploration of the oil and the gas, recreacional traffic and more than we often avoided that the whales communicate. “Many whales have very traditional arguments of feeding and his migratory routes to happen throughout the low lines of the coast, that now are something of noisiest, the possible habitat more heavy affected,” he said. “The excess of the area of the ocean that a whale can communicate and listen today has shriveled to a small fraction down of which it was less than a century ago.”

Lakes seen on Titan

The scientists have found what they create are definitive evidence that the lakes of the liquid methane exist in the surface of the greatest Saturn moon, Titan. In a paper he published in the application the nature of the newspaper, of Thursday the data these scientists of the projection of image of the radar gathered during flyby of the moon by Cassini of the NASA that the spaceship demonstrated in 2006 July that the considered dark characteristics near the North Pole of the moon are explained more more good possible by them than they are lakes. The characteristics considered by constant Cassini with the characteristics that are lakes include their location in topographic depressions and levels that vary of the embankment. The results confirm preliminary burdens of data of flyby that appeared to support the existence of the lakes.

Ovarian cancer symptoms

The symptoms of ovarian cancer can appear months before the cancer is found. Unless a woman is getting the tests that would reveal the cancer these symptoms many times wont be diagnosed. This alone is one of the problems with detecting ovarian cancer in its early stages. The symptoms of ovarian cancer are quite often dismissed due to the fact that they can be rather benign.

Stomach swelling and digestive problems for instance which are common symptoms of the presence of ovarian can be easily dismissed and ignored. Stomach problems are something everyone experiences at various times in their life. Ovarian cancer afflicts more than twenty-two- thousand women annually in the U.S. If caught in the early stages this cancer is treatable as goes for many other cancers.

If detected in its early stages, before it has spread from the ovaries a woman has a ninety percent chance of living for at least another five years. Unfortunately, less than twenty percent of ovarian cancer is detected in its early stage, Due to the fact that the symptoms of ovarian cancer don’t involve the ovaries themselves the cancer many times can be overlooked as tests like stomach imaging can overlook the ovaries.

This is not to say that every time a woman gets a stomach ache or pelvic pain she should dash off to be tested for ovarian cancer. In cases where problems are persistent though researchers have concluded that ovarian cancer should be considered. If tests have ruled out other causes than tests for ovarian cancer should be performed. Ovarian cancer is a relatively rare cancer in women, it afflicts a small part of the general population and makes up a small percentage of the cancers afflicting women in general.

For the woman stricken with this form of cancer the statistics mean nothing though. So it appears from research findings that women have to take a greater part in the detection of this disease due to the nature of the symptoms and the elusive nature of this disease and with early detection so imperative in determining the survival rate of women afflicted with ovarian cancer.

If tests have ruled out other causes for the symptoms than tests for ovarian cancer should be performed earlier in the diagnosis process. A womans early response to the persistent symptoms related to ovarian cancer can be the key to her survival. New research has discovered that ultrasound and the CA125 test were many times not effective in detecting ovarian cancer in its early stages even in women already at high risk for developing the disease.

Women at high risk include women with a family history of the disease and women predisposed to it due to genetic mutations that can make ovarian cancer more likely. Of the two tests the blood test has shown to be more effective in finding ovarian cancer but it can sometimes give false positive results. Statistics are not good for the early detection of the cancer so other means must be developed it seems.

Experts agree that more research is needed in the area of detection of the disease as this seems to be so critical in determining the survival rate for ovarian cancer. The symptoms will always be the same though so for their part women must make themselves more aware of this cancer and its early detection. Tracking the symptoms can only be of help. Keeping an accurate record of your early symptoms and being persistent during the evaluation process can be the difference between surviving and not surviving ovarian cancer.

How to combine studies and working?

For someone, it is very difficult to have a successful studying and work together. Studying takes a lot of time and efforts. But sometime it is necessary to dilute studies with something else.

As being a KIMEP student it’s very convenience to work and study together by having an opportunity to make a personal schedule. So you can study in the morning and then work, and vice versa. But if you aren’t nimble, adoptable and clever enough, you will have problems either on studying, or in working.

What vacancies can be more attractive in the multitude? On the first year of studying, the majority of students take different directions. These can be sellers, waitresses, assistances, operators on telephony, cash machines or game machines, promoters, generally students prefer job with flexible work schedule.

Then, they become intend to work related their future profession. Majority of students, who work by profession, are staying in the place they begin to work. Joining on-line business

Making money at home is really cool! Everyone is interested in earning easy money. From the first sight it may seem to be really attractive: you earn a lot of money doing nothing. But what can happen in the reality? In the Blog posted by Google, there is an example of failed on-line business. There was written:

“Tom was tired of his day job and he knew there had to be a easier way to make money. He began his search online, while online he ran across an online business. The online business promised quick wealth and the best part was he did not have to do anything. So the next day he quit his job and decided he could live off the 5,000 dollars he had in savings. Well no money came in from his new business but money kept on flowing out of his savings account. Before Tom knew it the 5,000 dollars was gone and he had to find a new job just to pay the bills. Tom swore he would never do business again online because everything there was a scam.”

From this story it is evident that not every chance of getting rich this way is successful. And how to avoid such kind of mistakes? In that blog some advices for freshmen in this sphere are also given:

“First, do not quit your day job if you have one. Think of your new online business as a part time business at first. You still need to pay the bills. Next, if you do not have a job and are living off your savings, do not spend all your savings on your online business. You must budget yourself and your living expenses must come first. Do not pay 3,000 dollars for an opportunity unless you can afford to lose the money.”

Yea, no matter how attractive it can seem, don’t forget about possible consequenses:)

Anti-trust and journalism: good news?

Discussion, criticism and resources for Canadian journalists … by journalists.

Anti-trust and journalism: good news?

by Deborah Jones on Sun 28 Jan 2007 04:31 PM EST,

”Quick now. Who said, in referring to media ownership issues: “You can’t have a functioning democratic system which works at its optimum unless you have diversity of voices.” Time’s up. That quote was by Konrad von Finckenstein, former head of the Competition Bureau. As the brand new chairman of the CRTC, he’s the guy who’ll have most influence over the purchase of CHUM Ltd. by CTVglobmedia Inc. and the acquisition of Alliance Atlantis Communications Inc. by CanWest Global Communications Corp. — and perhaps the state of Canadian journalism for a long time to come. Or not.” more »
